Steve Gadd & Scott during playback L'Image out in the studio garden The best band you never heard! In the late 70's future studio superstars, Mike Mainieri, Steve Gadd, Warren Bernhardt, David Spinozza and Tony Levin formed the fusion group L'Image in Woodstock New York. The legendary band performed very few shows before going their separate ways. Collectively the members have appeared on the bulk of the pop music created in the 80's and 90's. Last month they reuinited to do their first ever recording together here at NRS Recording. • • • The Fugs music was recently featured in the latest Coen Brothers film, "Burn After Reading". Tuli Kupferberg's iconic anthem, "C.I.A. Man" plays over the closing credits. Some Sessions of note.... Jack DeJohnette, John Patitucci and Danilo Perez were in the studio to record their first CD together. The All Star Trio, recorded a set of mostly new original tunes for the project. John and Danilo were between stops as members of the Wayne Shorter Band. We will be mixing later this summer and expect a 2009 release. Scott tracked the session and a video documentary of the project was shot for future editing and release. The Brubeck Brothers - Classified featuring The Imani Winds released on Koch International. Our old Friends Chris and Dan Brubeck were in to record an ambitious Project that included a Suite for Woodwinds and Jazz Quartet. The Imani Winds, joined the Brubecks with Mike Demicco on Guitar and Chuck Lamb on Keys for this recording which was produced by Chris & Dan Brubeck, Mike DeMicco and Scott Petito. Áine Minogue - Celtic Pilgrimage released on Sounds True. The latest CD from The gifted Harpist and Singer Aine Minogue was produced by Scott Petito. Celtic Pilgrimage features Cellist Eugene Friesen, from the Paul Winter Consort (Congratulations Eugene on this Year’s Grammy!) Also on this recording are Percussionist, Chris Carey, Steve Gorn on Bansuri Flutes, Throat Singer, Baird Hersey, Vocalists, Leslie Ritter and Beth Reineke and Scott Petito on Bass, Guitars and Keyboards. The Album is a Sonic Pilgrimage, a true fusion of world music styles. As of this writing the CD was climbing up to the top of the NAR radio charts. Jonathan, Grasshopper, Beth, Marc Shulman, Jeff Mercel V2 recording artists Mercury Rev were in tracking for their latest project which included ambient experimental soundscapes. Guitarist Marc Shulman (Jewel, Chris Botti) and Scott Petito joined the Revvers on Guitar and Bass and lots of loops. A good time was had by all! Scott also mixed the bonus album which will be released on vinyl as well as for digital download. Blue Note recoding artist Don Byron visited the studio to track Clarinet and various Saxophones for Guitarist Greg Chako’s album which also featured Delfeayo Marsalis on Trombone. Don also worked on a very hip soundtrack for a Norwegian art installation, performing on all instruments. Kelleigh McKenzie recorded and is about to release her debut CD, Chances. This recording is a lively collection of her original americana songs. Kelleigh Sings and plays Banjo, Guitar and Harmonium. Dan Hickey (They Might Be Giants) played some stellar Drums and Percussion on many of the tracks. Scott Petito added Bass and Jeff Michne joined in on Electric Guitar as well as co-producing the project. Christian Sands - Risin' Is the latest offering by this jazz piano phenom. The album features Miles Davis alumni Bill Evans on Saxophone. Scott Petito mixed this recording and Dr. Billy Taylor served as executive producer. Though still a teenager, Christian has already been performing at major venues along side jazz legends for years and we expect to be hearing a lot more from this ‘Risin’ star! Craig Urquhart - Secret Spaces is Craig’s 7th solo piano CD and was nominated for Best Instrumental Piano Album by the NAR LifeStyle Music Awards. Produced and recorded by Scott Petito, Craig’s latest recording is yet another masterful collection of musical poetry. Scott with Don Byron The Christine Spero Group released their latest Brazillian / jazz flavored CD, My Spanish Dream on The Collective Works label. This recording is getting rave reviews and has been featured on SmoothJazz.com. Christine offers up dynamic vocals and dazzling Piano work on her spirited compositions. Spero is brilliantly supported by Elliot Spero on Sax and Percussion with Mike Woinoski on Bass and Jody Sumber on Drums. You Are Here by Globetrotting is co-operative music ensemble featuring John Davey on Double-Bass with Steve Gorn on Bansuri Flutes, Clarinet and Sax and Brian Melick on assorted Percussion. This trio creates an organic brew consisting of mystical jazz and world music intonations and phrasings sprinkled with whimsical melodies. Anne Hills - Ef You Don‘t Watch Out! Anne Hills Sings the Poems of James Whitcomb Riley Indiana's beloved “Hoosier Poet” of the late 19th century. On this recording, Anne brings ten of Riley's beloved poems back to life with poignant, fun and thoughtful folk arrangements. Legendary Percussionist Lenny Castro (Fleetwood Mac, Rolling Stones to name only a few) was in adding percussion overdubs for the first Kilimanjaro recording in 25 years! Bud Buckley - It's About Time is his second recording of self penned tunes. Joining Bud (Vocals and Acoustic Guitar) are a variety of noted musicians including Violinist Deni Bonet (Cyndi Lauper) Drummer Chris Carey and Guitarist Helen Avakian who also produced this recording. Michael Jerling’s latest CD Crooked Path was Mixed and Mastered by Scott Petito. The album includes thirteen of Michael's original songs with musical support from Tony Markellis, Teresina Huxtable, Larry Clyman, Danny Whelchel, Bob Warren and many other talented folks. Body Resilient is the stunning debut release by jazz guitarist Mike Minasi. Mike is ably accompanied by Jean-luc Ponte Drummer Thierry Arpino and Bassist Dave Anderson (Bill Evans) Elly Wininger - Back Eddy Blues Nimble Guitarist and veteran of the early NYC folk and blues club scene, Elly has self-produced this CD of 9 original tracks and one cover which includes a solo by David Bromberg. ******************************************************************************************* Mastering News... We have also added to our mastering collection, some new toys and plugins, as well as Sonic Solutions as our program of choice. Yes, we have just added a Pro Tools HD3 system and the Icon D-command for Mixing. This picture was taken right after unpacking it. Some Sessions of note.... 2006/2007 Aine Minogue Released her haunting “Celtic Lamentations” on the Sounds True label. Produced by Scott Petito, he also plays bass and guitar as well as arranged a number of the compositions on this disc. Joanie Madden, leader of the well know Celtic group Cherish the Ladies added whistles to the project. Eugene Friesen from the Paul Winter Consort added his beautiful cello parts, while Baird Hersey contributed his ethereal overtone singing. This record was voted best Celtic CD by NAR Magazine, was a top 5 album pick on the syndicated radio program Echoes and was featured on NPR’s Sound and Spirit. Jazz vocalist Michael Franks recorded his latest album "Rendezvous in Rio" at NRS. The CD was released internationally by Koch and Columbia/Japan. The album features a number of producers who also perform on this recording including Charles Blenzig, Jimmy Haslip, Jeff Lorber, Scott Petito and Chuck Loeb. As always with a Michael Franks record it features many great players including Vinnie Colaiuta, Eric Marienthal, Cafe, Chris Hunter and many more. "ADLIB Magazine", the premier music magazine of Japan, has selected "Rendezvous in Rio" as the best international popular album in Japan for 2006. This album has enjoyed over 25 weeks at the top of the jazz radio charts. Anne Hills has released her highly acclaimed CD, “Beauty Attends: The Heartsongs of Opal Whiteley” on the Collective Works Label. This project is a is a collection of acoustic chamber folk-art songs with lyrics taken from the nature diary of Opal Whiteley, a 6-year-old savant. Opal’s writings were set to music by legendary songwriter Michael Smith (The Dutchman, Spoonriver). The album was arranged and produced by Scott Petito and expressively sung by Anne Hills. Other musicians performing on this recording include:Eugene Freisen:cello, Barbara Rizek:flute, Ann Churukian:oboe & english horn, Peter Davis:clarinet, Peter Vitalone:piano and Monty Van Pelt:bassoon. Kat Mills’ “Two” the Soulful, folk- rockin’ follow up to her acclaimed debut, "Long Time", was also released on Collective Works. This record features a steller cast of musicians including Jerry Marotta (Island of Men) on percussion, Marc Shulman (Suzanne Vega) - guitar design, Larry Campbell (Bob Dylan) -guitar, violin and mandolin. Scott Petito on production and bass...good pastries, groovy people...a lovely time was had by all! Composer and pianist Craig Urquhart and Tenor Michael Slattery Released their New CD “Secret and Divine Signs”. This recording contains lyrical songs and beautiful piano music set to the poetry of Emily Dickinson, Walt Whitman and others. Five star reviews were received from both BBC Music Magazine and Classic FM Magazine for performance and classical recording as well as a Grammy nomination. Craig worked as a musical assistant to Leonard Bernstein for many years and there is the same approachability to his music. Michael has a fine clear voice, secure throughout the wide range demanded by these beautiful pieces. Ed Sanders and Scott Petito put together “The Fugs Greatest Hits” which includes never released material from Live shows from the 80’s and 90’s in addition to studio recordings from over the last 25 years. This spring The Fugs will be going back into the studio to record the follow up to their Artemis CD, “The Fugs Final CD [Part 1]”. Joy Askew former vocalist with Peter Gabriel and Joe Jackson, cut several tracks at NRS with the rhythm section of Jerry Marotta on drums and Scott Petito on bass for her upcoming new release “Pirates of Eel Pie”. Her song “Hip These Days” from this new CD is currently a finalist in the International Songwriting Contest. Danielle Woerner recorded and mixed her latest recording, “Voices of the Valley” on Albany Records. The album features music by contemporary composers of the Hudson Valley including Robert Starer and Peter Schickele to name but a few. The lovely classical recording was produced by Baikida Carroll and features Danielle’s soaring soprano voice. Pianist Michael Cain (keyboardist for Meshell N'degeocello, bassist Dave Holland, guitarist Pat Metheny) recorded his latest trio CD at NRS with Jack DeJohnette on drums and bassist Lonnie Plaxico (Cassandra Wilson). This CD features Michael’s thoughtful compositions and will be released later this year. Jack Dejohnette also completed mastering and sweetening on a duet project with legendary guitarist Bill Frisell entitled, “The Elephant Sleeps But Still Remembers”, which documents the incredible first performance by two unparalleled musical visionaries. Released on Jack’s Golden Beams label, this performance was recorded live at the 2001 Earshot Festival in Seattle. The CD was engineered by Ben Surman and was mastered and assembled by Scott Petito. Scott also edited and assembled Jack’s Trio Beyond record “Saudades” which is a Trio project including John Scofield and Larry Goldings For ECM records. Steve Gillette and Cindy Mangsen’s new album “Being There” was mixed and mastered by Scott Petito at NRS Recording Studio. Cindy also completed her solo album “Cat Tales” which includes songs of the feline persuasion. Cindy contributed vocals, guitar and concertina on this one and it also features Priscilla Herdman and Anne Hills on vocals. Scott Petito added acoustic bass to both of these projects. Don Haynie and Sheryl Samuel just completed their latest CD, “Here in America” with a pre-album release of the radio singles “Please Don’t Blame It All On Texas” and “The Border”. Don & Sheryl’s CD features "Professor Louie” Hurwitz on keyboards and accordion and Randy Ciarlante formerly of the Band on percussion. The Brubeck Brothers’ “Intuition” released on Koch International has been burning up the jazz airplay charts and is currently #7 since it’s release in October 2006. The Brubecks are planning on a new CD scheduled to begin in July at NRS and in addition to the Brubeck Brothers this CD will feature label mates Imani Winds. Vocalist and songwriter Sarah Pedinotti has been working on her upcoming release, featuring band members Tony Markellis (Trey Anastasio) on bass, Dave Payette on piano and Chris Carey on drums. Sarah has been receiving a lot of buzz of late and has been performing at some of the most prestigious jazz festivals on the east coast. Baird Hersey was in to record vocals with Krishna Das for Baird’s upcoming Prana CD. Krishna Das has taught with Ram Das and has been chanting on a regular basis in venues all over the world. Jazz pianist John Esposito released his two albums recently, “Down Blue Marlin Road” and “The Blue People” and also completed remixes on recordings from a 1986 session that includes trumpeter Dave Douglas which will be released sometime in 2007. A few other artists who have recently completed CDs, or have projects underway include; Lee Shaw, Nancy Donnelly, Lara Herscovitch, The Christine Spero Group, Helen Avakian, Cathy Young and up and coming artist Billie Rainbird. Jerry Marotta - Scott - Joy Askew Another Busy Year At NRS Recording Studio! Some Sessions of note.... Early in the year, Hungarian Jazz Pianist, Kalman Olah brought his trio in to track a new recording. Kalman is one of the most sought after and respected young pianists in Europe today. Joining him were Jazz legends, drummer, Jack DeJohnette and Bassist, Ron McClure. Look for a CD release later this year. Highly regarded blues artist, Scott Ainslie, embarked on a new and challenging direction for his latest disc, “The Feral Crow”. A collection of his original songs with a gritty political edge. Scott Petito produced and played bass, mandolin and assorted other instruments. Drummer, Jerry Marotta (Peter Gabriel, Paul McCartney) supplied inventive and powerful percussion. Former Suzanne Vega guitarist, Marc Shulman, created evocative and edgy guitar parts. Peter Vitalone added some biting Hammond B3 as well as delicate piano offerings. Vocalist, Leslie Ritter added supportive and smokey backing vocals. Singer / Songwriter, Kate McDonnell recorded her Appleseed Records debut, “Where The Mangoes Are”. Scott Petito again produced and played multiple instruments on this CD. Joining Kate and Scott were drummer/ percussionist Sam Zucchini and Mindy Jostyn on violin, harmonica and accordion. Also, Marc Shulman added more of his signature electric guitar playing to this recording. Bassist and trombonist, Chris Brubeck, (Dave Brubeck Quartet) was in the studio for several projects including, work on his song cycle “River of Song” a new vocal piece for Frederica Von Stade. Rachel Luxon added vocals to the live recording of the Tassajara Symphony Orchestra. Chris was also joined by his band mates, Mike DeMicco, Chuck Lamb, and brother drummer Dan Brubeck to complete the score for the film “Rittenhouse Square”. The documentary is about a famous park in the Philadelphia, PA area. Jay Ungar and Molly Mason of “Ashokan Farewell” fame, worked on two projects this year. One was a fiddle tune duet recording that is still in progress. Jay and Molly also mixed and edited with Scott Petito their national WPRI Radio Special, “The Pleasures of Winter”. Scott recorded the live concert last Christmas at the historic Bardavon Opera House in Poughkeepsie, NY. The line up up performers included, folk legend, Odetta, banjo virtuoso, Tony Trischka, author, actor and story teller, Malachy McCourt, and Signature Sound Recording Artists, The Mammals. Shanachie Recording Artist, Cathie Ryan, (Cherish The Ladies) worked on songs for her new solo project. John Doyle, from the Celtic supergroup Solas, added his distinctive guitar work. This record also includes vocals and violin from Sara Milonovich, who is currently working on her own release. Jazz drummer and composer, Jeff “Seige” Seigel (Sir Roland Hanna Trio), tracked his latest quartet recording, "Magical Spaces". Featuring the fine playing of pianist, Francesca Tanskley (Billy Harper), Saxophonist, Erica Lindsay and bassist Danton Boller (Jazz Mandolin Project, Roy Hargrove). Trumpet Legend, Baikida Carroll co-produced this fine CD. Scott Petito mixed and mastered an upcoming release by Jack DeJohnette and Don Alias.These two master percussionists face off in a fiery set of progressive music. The disc will be released later this year on Jack's own new label and will be distributed by Koch International. This record is a must have for all drum enthusiasts. Michael Franks' recording “Watching The Snow” was winner of Japan’s ADLIB Magazine “Grand-Prix” award for best album of the year in the pop/rock category and was released in 2004 on Warner Brothers/Rhino Records. This CD was previously available from Columbia Records only in Japan. Scott prepped the master for its worldwide release. Michael is busy working on material for a new recording planned to begin this year. “Streamwalker” by Craig Urquhart was a top New Age Radio release for 2004. The album features Craig and his beautiful solo piano compositions. The pure yet sophisticated performances were made on Craig’s own, one of a kind Bosendorfer piano, which was hand picked for him by Leonard Bernstein. Recorded on location in New York City by co-producers Scott Petito and Alexander Ostrovsky (technician for John Lennon - remember that white piano?) , the CD was edited and mixed at NRS. Baird Hersey’s 9 piece overtone singing group, Prana was recorded by Scott early this year. “The Eternal Embrace” is an all a cappella project which features the unique singing of multi-toned harmonics, similar to Tibetan throat singers. The record has been very well received at ambient and new age radio and has become a staple on radio programs, Musical Star Streams and Hearts of Space. V2 Recording Artists, Mercury Rev completed tracking on several songs for their recently released CD, “The Secret Migration”. Recently the band completed additional recording of “B-sides” and Bonus Tracks to promote the album as they embark on their worldwide tour. Scott Petito and violinist Larry Packer, joined the band on these tracks, adding guitar, fiddle, and mandolin. Mercury Rev was a featured artist on Apple’s i-tunes download page during January and February. Jack DeJohnette & Scott Mike DeMicco, Dan & Chris Brubeck Jonathan from Mercury Rev Grammy Nomination! Jazz legends Jack DeJohnette, Larry Goldings and John Scofield were in to work on their high energy power trio project. Jay Ungar & Molly Mason completed their new album, "Relax Your Mind" on Angel / EMI. Legendary rock group, "The Fugs" recorded and mixed their latest release, "The Fugs Final CD [part 1]". on Artemus records, a DVD collection is next on the agenda Folk icon, Pete Seeger completed work on his latest CD, "Seeds; The Songs of Pete Seeger Vol. 3" for Appleseed Records. Guest artist on the new disc include, Ani Defranco, Steve Earle,Billy Bragg and Natalie Merchant. Other recent Appleseed releases recorded here at NRS include, Tom Pacheco's "There Was a Time" and the self-titled debut album by folk supergroup, "Fourtold". The new recording, "Watching The Snow" by jazz vocalist, Michael Franks for Columbia Records has recently received a prestigeous award in Japan. The album features some of the best players on the jazz scene today.
